The power of place, the power of art, the power of speech — these forces became spectacularly animated by forms of religiosity on January 6, 2021, as the nation watched an insurrection at the Capitol unfold that was fueled — in part — by white Christian Nationalism. In the aftermath of the event, religion has continued to be invoked by leaders across the political spectrum amidst calls for our national healing and reconciliation. In this 4-part GTUx series, led by GTU scholars from diverse disciplinary and religious backgrounds, we explore the complex entanglement of politics and religion on January 6th and thereafter.

Deena Aranoff is assistant professor of medieval Jewish studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. Her interests include rabbinic literature, medieval patterns of Jewish thought and the broader question of continuity and change in Jewish history. Deena is also a community educator and teaches Bible, rabbinics, and Jewish mysticism in a variety of adult education programs. Deena is also a recently certified yoga instructor and teaches yoga in San Francisco.

Dr. Valerie Miles-Tribble is Professor of Ministerial Leadership and Practical Theology at the Berkeley School of Theology and Chair of the Women's Studies in Religion Certificate Program in the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Engaging liberation theology as womanist scholar, practical theologian, and community activist, raises critical awareness of systemic oppressions. Dual departmental alignment in Theology & Ethics and Religion & Practice integrates theoethics to examine intersections of social justice praxis in church and society for restorative public approaches. Rev. Dr. Valerie is an ordained clergy woman and interim pastor with earned Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from GTU schools and PhD in Leadership & Organizational Change from Walden University, Minneapolis. Her service roles in the Women of Color National Network (WOCIM) and regional coordinator in Rise Together Mentor Network supports intergenerational empowerment of millennial leaders across contextual identities. Elizabeth S. Peña is the GTU’s Interim Dean and VP for Academic Affairs. She also serves as the Director of the Center for the Arts & Religion and Doug Adams Gallery, and Senior Lecturer in Art, Anthropology, and Museum Studies. She earned PhD and MA degrees in Archaeology from Boston University and a BA in Classical Archaeology from the University of Michigan. As an archaeologist, arts administrator, and museum professional, she has directed archaeological field projects, managed academic departments, served as museum curator, undertaken a wide range of museum consulting projects, and participated in review panels for federal funding agencies and professional organizations. She has taught courses in archaeology, anthropology, and museum studies; at the GTU, she teaches on topics related to museums and religion, material culture theory, and object based learning. In her spare time, she is likely to be found reading or gardening.

Devin Phillip Zuber is an associate professor of American Studies, Religion, and Literature at the GTU, and also presently the Chair of the Department for Historical and Cultural Studies of Religion. He teaches in the PhD program's concentrations for Art & Religion, New Religious Movements, and Religion & Literature. Much of his teaching and research remains focused on the nineteenth-century cultural reception of the Scandinavian scientist-turned-mystic, Emanuel Swedenborg (1688--1772).

Prior to coming to Berkeley in 2011, Zuber taught at the University of Osnabrück and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, both in Germany, and at Queens College in New York City. He has been a fellow, scholar-in-residence, or visiting research professor at the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library (London), at the Wabash Center for Religion and Theology at Wabash College in Indiana, in Stockholm University’s Department for Aesthetics and Culture (Sweden), at the Mesa Writer's Refuge in Point Reyes, California (with the Gardarev Center), and at the Rachel Carson Center for the Environment at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 2016, Zuber was also a scholar-in-residence at the former estate of the film director Ingmar Bergman on Fårö island (Sweden).
