This 4-module series explores the role that meaning and purpose play in the 21st century workplace, with particular emphasis on the ways that the workplace is adopting Buddhist spiritual practice in a secular context.

UC Berkeley's Carolyn Chen, Mobius founder Aden Van Noppen, San José State University's Funie Hsu, and Union Theological Seminary's John J. Thatamanil are guest instructors in this special offering.

In their interviews they explore:

• The ways in which modern employers and organizations are seeking to respond to workers who are seeking purpose and meaning through their work

• How some workplaces are starting to replace religious and civic engagement by fostering devotion to the company instead

• How divorcing spiritual practice from its ethical and historical context can run the risk of keeping employees more distanced from their meaning and purpose, rather than closer to these goals

• How a consciousness of spiritual well-being within companies can enrich the employee and their sense of dignity if applied thoughtfully and intentionally

Carolyn Chen is a sociologist and Professor of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, Co-Director of the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion, and Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Religions Research Initiative. Her research focuses on religion, spirituality, and work in contemporary America, as well as Asian American religion. Carolyn has published three books: Work Pray Code: When Work Becomes Religion in Silicon Valley (Princeton 2022), Getting Saved in America: Taiwanese Immigration and Religious Experience (Princeton 2008) and Sustaining Faith Traditions: Religion, Race and Ethnicity among the Latino and Asian American Second Generation (NYU 2012). Her work has been featured on NPR and in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN, and The Atlantic.

Funie Hsu (she/they) is a transdisciplinary scholar and Associate Professor of American Studies at San José State University. She was a former University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Davis and received a Ph.D. in Education with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality (UC Berkeley); an Ed.M. in Education (Harvard); and a B.A. in Asian American Studies (UC Davis). Hsu’s research interests reflect her experiences as a former public school teacher; her background as an immigrant from a low-income, multilingual family, and her Buddhist upbringing. One of her current book projects examines the growth of secular mindfulness in schools in relation to race, religion, and neoliberalism. She is a co-organizer of May We Gather, a national Buddhist memorial ceremony for Asian American ancestors.

John J. Thatamanil is Professor of Theology and World Religions at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He is the author of Circling the Elephant: A Comparative Theology of Religious Diversity (Fordham, 2020) and The Immanent Divine: God, Creation, and the Human Predicament. An East-West Conversation. He is currently working on a book entitled, Desiring Truth: The Quest for Wisdom in a Post-Truth Era. He is a past President of the North American Paul Tillich Society. He teaches a wide variety of courses including, “Hindu Religious Thought and Practice,” “Paul Tillich as Public Theologian,” “Process Theology,” and “Double Belonging: On Multiple Religious Participation.” He also regularly co-teaches a course on Gandhi and King with Cornel West. Thatamanil is an Anglican/Episcopalian who also reads and practices in traditions of Hindu and Buddhist nondualism. He is also an ordained Priest in and the Diocesan Theologian for The Anglican Diocese of Islands and Inlets (colonial name: Anglican Diocese of British Columbia).

Aden Van Noppen is an entrepreneur, community-weaver, strategist, and optimist who spent the last decade enabling more compassionate and just technology. She is the Founder and Co-Director of Mobius, a home for people creating technology products, systems, and narratives that support liberation and thriving for all. She founded Mobius in 2018 after a year as a Resident Fellow at Harvard Divinity School focusing on the intersection of tech, ethics, spirituality and justice. Prior to that, she was on the team of the US Chief Technology Officer in the Obama White House, where she developed and led programs that use tech as a tool to address inequality. Aden was also part of the founding leadership team of The Sanctuaries, a racially and religiously diverse spiritual community, rooted in the arts and social justice.
