This GTUx Original will explore some of the ethical and theological implications of AI. Is the possibility of AI possessing human like intelligence or even Superintelligence a threat to human existence? Will AI need or choose religion, or will humans in turn worship AI? We will look at hopes for AI: how it can be used to help people make better decisions, fight climate change and the effects of human technology on the environment. We will also look at the hazards of AI: how easy it is to create and spread misinformation and the problems that creates, and how costly it is in environmental terms to gather and store the data needed for AI and the resources need to train it. Finally we will raise questions about the future status of AI. Will AI achieve consciousness, what might AI morality look like, and what if humans decide to incorporate AI into their own nature through computer-brain interfaces?

Ted Peters arrived at the GTU in 1978 and has taught in the doctoral program continuously into his present emeritus stage. His systematic theology, God--The World's Future, now in its 3rd edition, has been used as a text book in numerous seminaries around the world. For more than a decade he edited Dialog, A Journal of Theology. Along with Robert John Russell he is the co-founder and co-editor of the journal, Theology and Science, at the GTU's Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences. From 1990 to 1994 he served as Principal Investigator for a US NIH/ELSI grant to study the \"Theological and Ethical Implications of the Human Genome Project.\" From 1998 to 2003 he directed the CTNS Science and Religion Course Program which fostered the development of new courses in science and religion around the world. Ted Peters has served both as interim dean of the GTU and interim president of PLTS. He is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is an Advisor for AI and Faith.\n
